Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is a condition characterised by the loss of bladder control. Symptoms range from regularly leaking urine especially when you cough or sneeze to having sudden urges to urinate; these urges are so strong that chances are that you might not reach the toilet in time. There are different types of urinary incontinence and these include stress incontinence, urge incontinence, overflow incontinence, mixed incontinence, functional incontinence and total incontinence.

How do incontinence treatments work?

There are many treatment options available for men suffering from urinary incontinence and the treatment you get will depend on factors such as the type and severity of your condition, your preferences and your lifestyle. By changing certain habits and strengthening pelvic muscles through exercises such as Kegel exercises, some men actually regain urinary control. However, if these behavioural methods do not work, you can always try medicines and devices used to treat incontinence.

Some medicines for urinary incontinence work by blocking irregular or unusual nerve signals which result in the bladder contracting at the wrong time. Other medicines slow down urine production. There are also medicines which either shrink your prostate or relax the bladder. Common types of medicines include Alpha-blockers, 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, Imipramine and Antispasmodics.

What is incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is defined as the involuntary loss of urine. There are many underlying causes of this condition. These include weak bladder muscles, nerve damage, particular prostate conditions and overactive bladder muscles. In order to diagnose urinary incontinence, doctors often perform a physical exam, tests involving an EEG and an EMG, an ultrasound and urodynamic testing. It is also essential for the doctor to take your medical history.

In order for the urinary system to work properly, the nerves and muscles must work together so that they keep urine in the bladder, only to release it at the correct time. Basically, nerves in our body are responsible for carrying signals from our brain to the bladder as well as the sphincter. However, any disease or even injury which affects the nerves can cause urination problems.

Symptoms

The main symptom of stress incontinence is the loss of urine as a result of pressure being exerted on the bladder when you exercise, sneeze or cough. With urge incontinence, it is that sudden and strong urge to urinate. This is usually followed by urinating involuntarily. The main indication of overflow incontinence is the frequent dribbling of urine. A person with this type of incontinence has an inability to empty the bladder. Mixed incontinence is a combination of any two or more forms of urinary incontinence. Functional incontinence is experienced mostly by older adults who have a physical or mental condition which makes it difficult for them to reach the toilet on time. With total incontinence, either you will be leaking urine continuously or periodically and uncontrollably leaking large volumes of urine.
