Genital Herpes

genital-herpesOne of the common infectious sexually transmitted infections is genital herpes. It is an uncomfortable and embarrassing STI that can cause painful symptoms, caused by the herpes simplex virus.

People can be affected in different ways, some people may not see the symptoms for weeks or even years. Some people suffer from the genital herpes symptoms soon after being infected. Genital herpes is also recurrent with symptoms returning within a couple weeks or months.

The condition is completely manageable although it’s impossible to completely remove the virus from your system. Once you have the virus you have it for life! Famir and Valtrex are two effective treatments that can treat the symptoms of genital herpes and minimise the outbreak.

With ongoing use of the prescription medications, the virus will almost go unnoticed and will feel like it’s disappeared altogether.

How do genital herpes treatments work?

Treatments can help you to both heal and prevent future genital herpes outbreaks. They also give you relief from the unbearable and nasty genital herpes symptoms. These treatments also treat cold sores and shingles which are also caused by the herpes simplex virus.

Valtrex – An effective anti-viral medication, valtrex can be used to treat a full outbreak of the herpes virus. The uncomfortable symptoms are usually reduced within the first 24 hours with the remaining symptoms disappearing within 5-10 days.

Famvir  – Is able to stop an outbreak before it begins. Taking famvir as soon as you notice the early signs of an outbreak can prevent it from getting any worse, within 24 hours. It can also be prescribed in lower doses to people who experience frequent outbreaks enabling them to push the virus into remission.

Zovirax  – Is also known as Aciclovir, which is also the active ingredient. It is an anti-viral medication used to treat infection such as genital herpes, shingles and cold sores.

Aciclovir – Is the generic version of the medication Zovirax. Aciclovir treats infections associated with the herpes simplex & varicella-zoster virus.

What is genital herpes?

Herpes simplex virus is the cause of genital herpes. There are 2 strains that can cause genital herpes however HSV-1 isn’t as powerful and can cause minor side effects like cold sores.

Symptoms will appear within the first day or two after being infected. People will then continue to suffer outbreaks on a regular basis, this may be a few times during the first 2 years. There are so many sufferers that don’t even know they have genital herpes and may never encounter symptoms. This is not such a good thing as you can still infect your sexual partner without having visible signs of herpes.

How do I become infected?

Genital herpes can be spread through skin to skin contact. It is highly contagious and spreads usually through unprotected sexual intercourse. If genital herpes is present on the surface of the skin, it can easily infect your partner. Herpes can still be contracted even if you don’t have sex. By touching skin genital herpes is active and symptoms present or from oral sex you can cause an infection to spread.

Genital herpes symptoms

Genital herpes symptoms don’t usually get much worst then the first time that you have an outbreak. Symptoms can last up to a month unless you treat the virus as soon as the symptoms are visible. Symptoms can include:

  • Pain during urinating
  • Painful red blisters
  • Fever

You can still use a genital herpes treatment for later outbreaks although they are usually less severe. These symptoms include:

  • Red sores
  • Tingling genitals
  • Burning sensation on the genitals
  • Blisters and ulceration

How is a genital herpes outbreak caused?

It is unknown what causes later outbreaks but the genital herpes virus may remain dormant in the system for years. Then one day out of the blue genital herpes symptoms can re-appear. Outbreak triggers include;

  • Excessive consumption of alcohol
  • Stress
  • Direct sun exposure to your genitals
  • Friction around your genital area
  • Fatigue and excessive tiredness

Is there a cure for genital herpes?

There is no current cure for herpes however with the use of regular genital herpes treatment, the virus can be put into remission. And the severity and duration of the genital herpes symptoms can all be reduced to a minimum. The herpes outbreaks will decrease over time and many will find the virus becomes dormant within the system and rarely causes them discomfort or embarrassment.
