Ofloxacin is a type of medication that is used for the treatment of bacterial infections. It is an antibiotic which prevents bacteria form multiplying. Studies have shown that Ofloxacin is well suited for treating urinary tract infections and prostatitis. How does Ofloxacin work?

Ofloxacin can be used as treatment for a lot of infections caused by bacteria pathogens (both gram positive and gram negative). It works by restraining DNA gyrase (a topoisomerase IV, and type 2 topoisomerase); an enzyme needed to separate replicated DNA. In other words, Ofloxacin stops bacterial cell division.

In some cases, Ofloxacin may also be used to treat other types of infections, including infections in the bones, joints, intestines and stomach. It can also help in treating or even preventing anthrax and other known plagues.

For pregnant women, it has been shown that fluoroquinolones can easily cross the blood-placenta and the blood-milk barrier. It is also extensively distributed to the fetal tissues. Hence, breast-feeding mothers who take Ofloxacin may expose their child to severe side effects.

How do I take Ofloxacin?

Ofloxacin is sold in the form ofa tablet so that it can be taken orally. It can be taken with or without food, two (2) times a day for three (3) days up to six (6) weeks. However, the length of treatment still depends on the type of infection, severity of the infection and on how the patient responds to the treatment.

When under Ofloxacin treatment, a patient must take it around the same times every day. Furthermore, the patient must see to it that there is an interval of twelve (12) hours in between doses. Since Ofloxacin is also known to cause adverse effects, it is important that the patient strictly follow the doctor’s prescription (taking more or less than what is prescribed is not advisable).

Are there side effects?

Taking Ofloxacin may cause side effects such as:

  • Changes in the ability to taste food
  • Cramps or stomach pain
  • Severe diarrhoea where stools are watery or even bloody
  • Swelling, pain, or itching of the vagina
  • Excessive tiredness
  • Hives
  • Loss of consciousness

If you experience any of the above mentioned side effects, it is imperative that you stop the treatment and see your doctor right away.

The doctor told me it would help within 48 hours and it did. Thank God for cranberry juice which helped me pass the kidney stone that probably led to the urinary tract infection in the first place. I drank the juice and 5 minutes later out came the stone, without any discomfort! Saved me 48 hours of anguish!
