How does Micronor work?
The active ingredient in Micronor is Norethisterone, which is a synthetic progestogen, similar to progestogen that is produced naturally by the female body. It works in a couple of different ways.
It can affect the natural mucus around the neck of the womb (cervix). Norethisterone intensifies the thickness of the mucus, making it harder for the male sperm to enter the womb from the vagina. By stopping sperm entering the womb, an egg is less likely to be fertilised, preventing pregnancy.
Norethisterone also changes the quality of the womb lining (endometrium). The changes prevent any eggs that have been fertilized from successfully implanting onto the wall of the womb.
Finally, norethisterone may prevent the release of an egg from the ovaries, however this may not occur in all women who take the mini-pill.
How do I take Micronor?
Micronor packets contain 28 tablets strips that are taken consecutively for 28 days. During this time you will experience a menstrual bleed for approximately 7 days. With any contraceptive pill it’s important to take the pill at the same time daily. If you forget to take Micronor, provided it’s within 12 hours of your usual time you can take the missed pill and still be protected against pregnancy.
Micronor side effects
Micronor side effects are usually less than other pills as it contains only one active hormone compared to other pills that have two active hormones. Women react differently to different pills and there are possible side effects you need to be aware of but not all women will experience side effects. These may include:
- Vaginal infections and irritation
- Headaches
- Sore and tender breasts
- Mood swings
- Lack of sex drive
- Weight loss or gain
- Bleeding and spotting
- Nausea and vomiting
- Changes in menstrual cycle
- Thrush
- Dizziness
