How does Microgynon work?
There are two active ingredients in Microgynon, these are ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel. The ingredients are synthetic versions of naturally produced hormones oestrogen and progesterone. Levels of sex hormones in the body change throughout the month when women have their usual menstrual cycle.
The sex hormones cause the ovaries to release an egg, this is known as ovulation and prepares the lining of the womb for possible pregnancy. If an egg hasn’t been fertilised at the end of the cycle, the hormones will drop and you will experience your monthly menstrual bleed.
How do I take Microgynon?
If this the first time in a month you are using hormonal contraceptives it is best to start on the first day of your period. You may also start during your period, but in that case make sure to use another form of contraceptive for the first 7 days of taking tablets to make sure you are protected from pregnancy.
Microgynon is a monophasic pill and every tablet contains equal doses of hormones. Every 21 days you take one pill followed by a rest for seven days from taking any tablets. When you have a rest for the seven days you will encounter a bleed which is the same as a period. You will also be protected from pregnancy during these 7 days. You must then commence the process again and start a new packet of Microgynon to continue to stay protected.
