What is Marvelon contraceptive pill?

Marvelon is a monophasic pill, meaning every tablet contains the same level of hormones in them. The two main ingredients in Marvelon are ethinylestradiol and desogestrel. Both ingredients are synthetic versions of sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone that are produced by the body.

How does Marvelon work?

Levels of sex hormones change throughout the month when women have their usual menstrual cycle. The hormones cause the ovaries to release an egg, this process is known as ovulation and prepare the lining of the womb for possible pregnancy. If an egg hasn’t been fertilized at the end of the cycle, the hormones will drop and you will experience your monthly menstrual bleed.

When you take the Marvelon pill on a daily basis, it contains the synthetic hormones, which tricks your body into thinking you have already ovulated. This stops an egg from being fertilized and being released from the ovaries every month. Hormones will also increase the texture of mucus on the opening of your womb making it harder for sperm to reach an egg, which can result in pregnancy.

How do I take Marvelon?

If you want immediate cover when you start Marvelon contraception then start on the first day of your period. If you do not start taking the pill on the first day then make sure you are using another form of protection until Marvelon starts to take effect. Marvelon will usually start to work after 7 days of taking the tablets. Marvelon is taken daily for 21 days or 28 days depending on which type you are taking.

Marvelon 21-day:

The packet contains 21 pills, which must be taken daily for 21 days followed by a 7-day break where you will have your period. You must then start the next packet even if you still have a bleed. This will make sure you are protected from pregnancy. You will also be protected during the pill-free week provided you follow instructions and take the pill correctly.

Marvelon 28-day:

This packet contains 28 tablets and taken daily with no break. Some women feel more comfortable taking tablets everyday as they may reduce the risk of forgetting to take the pill. You will still have your period for 7 days whilst taking tablets but these tablets are sugar pills and contain no hormones.
