Description

What is Malarone?

Malarone contains a combination of atovaquone and proguanil hydrochloride.

Malaria is a potentially fatal disease caused by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes that are infected carry plasmodium and when bitten will inject it into the bloodstream. Once plasmodium is in the bloodstream the parasites will travel into the liver where they multiply. Parasites are then released back into the bloodstream and invade the red blood cells and they multiply yet again.

Malaria attacks start when the red blood cells break open, releasing a build up of parasites into your bloodstream. The active ingredients used in malarone can prevent and treat malaria. Malarone stops the parasites from growing in your red blood cells. It stops the parasite from spreading and this then allows your body’s immune system to contain the virus and will eventually kill it.

How do I take Malarone?

Malarone should be taken prior to entering a malaria prone area. The medication should be taken during your stay and one week after returning home. To treat malaria: take the medication as prescribed by your doctor. In addition to taking an anti-malarial medication you should also use precautions such as, wearing protective clothing, using a repellent and having a mosquito net around the bed while you sleep to prevent being bitten.

Side effects

All medicine has side effects associated with taking them however not everyone will suffer from them. Keep in mind that the benefits of taking Malarone to prevent malaria are more important than some minor side effects. Most side effects usually only last 1-2 weeks when taking a new medication.

Common side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea

I have used Malarone for the past 3yrs, you have to take it 2 days prior to leaving the U.K. and for 5 days after returning. I find I get upset stomach and or nausea both on the 2nd day and 5 day period. When using it in Africa, I sometimes ended up with nightmares, but all round I find it is a good drug, and so far I have not contracted malaria.

I used Malarone for two years in Uganda and found it to be very effective and with minimal side effects. Having used other prophylactics against malaria in other African environments long term I would recommend it for those who do not like the side effects of Lariam (mefloquine).

I used Malarone for over a year while living in West Africa and found it to be effective with the only side effect being the occasional bad dream. It would be my choice for an anti-malarial were I to return there.

I would only take malarone, knowing that the FDA recently put a black box warning on mefloquine, but malarone is really messing me up. I live in Africa and will be for the next couple of years. Malarone is causing me to have horrific insomnia, some hallucinations and muscle contractions. My stomach pain I can deal with along with the back pain. The insomnia is killing me, though. I can’t work, I walk around like a zombie. I’m going to take my chances with malaria. No more pills for me.

I take low dose aspirin and after several days on malarone – I developed small bruises all over my extremities. I stopped taking the aspirin and the bruising cleared up.

Took this for 10 days during a trip to S. America. No side effects. Realized as the rest of my group experienced episodes of stomach distress and I had none that this anti-parasite was probably helping there too. No complaints!

I’m participating in a research trial where you take 4 Malarone tablets a day for 3 consecutive days prior to your trip which theoretically covers you for Malaria (I hope) – this is all being monitored by a doctor. I read these reviews trying to see what sort of side effects I’d experience due to my large dose and I was ready for the worst, then…… Nothing. I took 4 tablets in one go – and nothing. I can only assume this affects different people in different ways but I’d recommend eating the fattiest food you can find prior to taking the pills because I think that saved me (I ate a McDonald’s quarter pounder).

I was so scared to take these after all the bad reviews. I was in South Africa with a group and we were 8 people taking malarone and we were all without side effects luckily. We always took the tablet after eating and only for 14 days. but it was all fine :)

Took for 10 days for a 3 day visit to Kruger National Park. Was totally bricking it after readying all the scare stories. Zero side effects. No nausea, no weird dreams, nothing. Took with breakfast, including dairy.
