Description
How does Cilest work?
The two active ingredients in Cilest are ethinylestradiol and norestimate. These ingredients are synthetic versions of naturally produced hormones – oestrogen and progesterone. Levels of sex hormones change throughout the month when women have their usual menstrual cycle. The hormones cause the ovaries to release an egg, known as ovulation and prepares the lining of the womb for possible pregnancy. If an egg hasn’t been fertilised at the end of the cycle, the hormones will drop and you will experience your monthly menstrual bleed.
When you take the pill on a daily basis, it contains hormones, which tricks your body into thinking you have already ovulated. This stops an egg from being fertilized and being released from the ovaries every month. Hormones will also increase the texture of mucus on the opening of your womb making it harder for sperm to reach an egg, which can result in pregnancy.
How do I take Cilest?
When you first start taking Cilest, you must start on the first day of your menstrual bleed if you want immediate contraceptive cover. If you don’t start at the beginning of your period then make sure you use another form of birth control for at least 7 days until Cilest starts to work and to cover you from becoming pregnant.
Cilest is a monophasic pill, which means every tablet has the same hormone dose in it. Cilest is taken for 21 consecutive days with a 7 day break before restating the next packet. During the 7-day break you will experience a menstrual bleed and will take no tablets yet still be protected against pregnancy. With any contraceptive pill it’s always important to take the pill at the same time daily.
